Stihl MS 250: The Best Chainsaw for Home Use?

The Stihl MS 250 is one of the most popular chainsaws in its class. For over 20 years it has stayed in Stihl's lineup without losing ground. Let's find out why.

What Is the Stihl MS 250?

The Stihl MS 250 is a homeowner-class chainsaw introduced in 2002 as the successor to the Stihl 025. Despite its age, it is still sold today and remains one of the best-selling Stihl saws in the world. It is designed for firewood cutting, storm cleanup, felling trees of medium diameter, and general property maintenance.

The 45.4 cc engine delivers 2.77 hp at a weight of just 10.1 lbs (4.6 kg) — an excellent power-to-weight ratio for a non-professional saw. It comes standard with an 18-inch bar, though a 16-inch version is also available.

Design & Features

Anti-Vibration System

One of the key strengths of the MS 250 is Stihl's well-developed anti-vibration system. It significantly reduces operator fatigue during extended use. Compared to cheaper saws without such a system, the difference becomes noticeable after just 20–30 minutes of work.

Chain Brake

The saw is equipped with an inertia-activated chain brake that triggers on kickback. This is an important safety feature that protects the operator in unexpected situations. The brake has been tested in field conditions and engages in under 0.12 seconds.

Automatic Chain Oiler

The automatic oiling system delivers the right amount of bar oil during operation. Both the oil and fuel caps open without tools — a small but appreciated detail for anyone who refuels frequently in the field.

Chain Tensioner

The side-mounted chain tensioner allows for quick adjustment without extra tools. However, some users note the tensioner design is one of the weaker points of the model — under heavy use it's worth keeping an eye on chain tension regularly.

Starting the MS 250

Unlike newer Stihl models with ElastoStart or a decompression valve, the MS 250 uses a standard pull-cord starter. For a cold start, set the master control lever to choke, pull the cord until the first "pop," switch to warm-up position, and start. With a properly tuned saw, the whole process takes 3–5 pulls.

Some owners of older units report difficulty with cold starts — this is typically resolved by cleaning the carburetor and replacing the spark plug.

Pro tip: When starting, place the saw on the ground with your foot on the rear handle and the chain brake engaged. This is the safest starting method for mid-class chainsaws.

Real-World Performance

The MS 250 cuts confidently through trunks up to 12–14 inches (30–35 cm) in diameter. For regular firewood cutting, storm cleanup, and pruning on a property, its power is more than adequate. It will handle trees over 16 inches, but more slowly — for that work a more powerful model like the MS 261 or MS 290 would be a better fit.

At just 10.1 lbs, the saw doesn't tire you out even during extended overhead work or cutting on a slope — a real advantage over heavier semi-professional models.

How It Compares to Competitors

The main rivals in this class are the Husqvarna 445e II, Echo CS-490, and Poulan Pro PR5020. The MS 250 beats all of them on anti-vibration and ease of use. The Husqvarna 445e II is heavier with a similar displacement. The Echo CS-490 lacks an easy-start system. The Poulan Pro PR5020 trails on both vibration control and build quality.

Within Stihl's own lineup, the MS 251 is the "modernized" successor with several improvements — but the MS 250 still wins many users over with its straightforward design and time-tested reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stihl recommends 16" (40 cm) and 18" (45 cm) bars. Some experienced users fit a 20" bar, but this is not manufacturer-recommended and may reduce performance.
Stihl recommends unleaded gasoline (89 octane or higher) with no more than 10% ethanol, mixed with two-stroke oil at a 50:1 ratio (or per the oil manufacturer's instructions).
For trees up to about 14" in diameter — absolutely. For regular work on 16"+ trees, consider stepping up to the MS 261 or MS 291 with a larger displacement engine.
The model has been in production since 2002, so parts are widely available — both genuine Stihl and compatible aftermarket. Authorized dealers and online retailers are the easiest sources.
MSRP in the US is around $399. Used examples in good condition sell for $150–$250, which speaks to the model's durability and lasting demand.
